Michael Kiwanuka - “Kiwanuka” & Coming to Terms with Who He Is | The Daily Social Distancing Show
Michael Kiwanuka, welcome to the Daily Social Distancing Show.
- Oh, yeah. Thanks for having me. I’m happy to be here.
I am a little sad to be talking to you right now, because your concert was the last live event that I attended before all of the lockdowns happened. It was at the theatre in L.A. Forgive me I forget the name.
- Ace Hotel?
Yes, yes that was a beautiful intimate show. And I just remember being like this transcendent experience and everyone just like feeling that, and I was like “Oh men, we gotta do this more often.” And then, the lockdown hit.
- Man! That’s lame. I had no idea you were there. That’s amazing! That was one of my favorite shows ever. Definitely favorite shows in Los Angeles. But, yeah man, I mean, I can’t wait to get back and playing music again and when we get through this.
What made that show really special for me as well was that, was, you having your family there. You know, it was really cool when you were introducing your family and like they became a part of the show. What has that journey been like for them, you know, because your family came from Uganda, then moved to the UK. You know, your dad was out there hustling for your family. And I mean, to see their journey and to see their rise to the place you are now. I mean, it must really be insane for them and for yourself.
- Yes! it’s...it's amazing, I mean, mom still texts me. She texted me today, cause she heard a song on the radio here in the UK and she was like “it's on the radio!” It's still like that. They just love it, you know, and feel so excited, because obviously, growing up and playing, it was, they were always super supportive but it was like... Yeah, coming from Uganda was sort of like a risk to support their son doing--playing the guitar all day…
Right, right.
- do any school work and Mom had to really take a leap of faith and Dad to be like, “Okay, well we’ll support you. But make sure, you know, practice and work hard.” and it paid off. So, I owe so much to them for just being supportive and, you know, it was difficult for them, but they’re enjoying it now.
I remember being at your show in January, I don’t say this to gas you up, it was like a, It’s like you were telling us a story but a story that was happening inside you as a human being. You know, it was very personal, it was…, it was very vulnerable at the same time. And then I was shocked to find out that you, at a point, were really struggling with self-doubt. Like, you had impostor syndrome. You were like “I can't do this.” to the point where it cost you an opportunity to collaborate with Kanie West. Tell me a little bit about that and how you managed to work through that?
- Yeah, yeah. It was crazy. It was just basically, I was, maybe this has to do a bit with growing up but I just sort of, I was always trying to fit in, I thought, in order to, you know, be accepted or sort of succeed in whatever you’re doing. Whether it’s music...You, sort of, had to fit a bill.
Yeah.
- I thought it was the same with music. So, every time I tried to do music, that was like, what was on the radio, and I thought people would like, it just sounded awful. And then, whenever I was doing my own thing, it was like, “I love this but it’s like are people gonna understand 10 minutes songs?” or “Are people gonna be offended by lyrics?” Or, like if I do a song like “Black Man in a White World” what’s gonna happen? No one’s gonna play it. All these things.
Right, right.
とか、『Black Man in a White World』みたいな曲をやっても大丈夫かな?
- Always I thought I’m never gonna make it. And I just had all these doubts. So, when I went to the studio, you go to the studio with someone who’s amazing as, like, Kanie West, I just kept thinking “What does he want me to sound like, instead of me.”
Oh. Right, right.
- So, it’s just kind of learning and growing up and learning that being an artist is about being yourself and the unique... thing that makes you unique, thing that makes you different is your strength.
Your third album is entitled Kiwanuca. Most artists will call their debut album by their name, you know, It was interesting to me that when you with your third album as Kiwanuka, what was the reason for that?
- Yeah, yeah, yeah. Normally, your first album is self-titled. And it was… two reasons It was like, I definitely knew it would be a statement artistically because It’d be like “Oh, interesting that his 3rd album is self-titled. What is he trying to say?” Maybe it might draw you in. And at the same time it reflected kind of what I was saying before about, the self-impostor, you know, impostor syndrome. It was sort of like a declaration to be.
Oh, right, right, right.
- Yes. it’s who I am and finally come to terms that I’m enjoying. And it’s threefold. because then, my name was always something... I loved that but it carries a lot. So it talks about my heritage but it also describes that I’m a, you know, first-generation Britain, it says so much about me without you even meet me. So…
Right, right, right.
- Even just the pronunciation of the name and everything. It says so much. So, I thought, I used to sort of hide behind that name too, when I was growing up. The same way I wanted to fit in with music. I’d be like “Ah, no one can say my name… I wish it was simple.” Then I got older and sort of, like, felt so sad that I thought that. Now I’m proud of it. Yeah, let’s call the album. Have it being in the front, so, that’s why I went for it.
It feels like your entire journey has been one of, you know, I think, working through the past as you build a future. You’re now on the journey where you have been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. What’s amazing to me is that while this is happening, you are in the UK performing at your old high school where you performed your first concert. In fact we’re gonna be playing one of those performances at the end of the show. I would love to know what that journey is like. Because like, I don't know about you, but when I think about high school and I think about going back, I still think the bullies are gonna waiting there for me and they are going to like, ready to like, find me around a corner and I’ll be like, “But I’m the host of the Daily Show!” and they’ll be like, “Give us your Daily Show money!” What was that like for you going? Did you come in with like ”I’m Grammy nominated” swag? Or did you go like “Oh boy! it's Michel with the funny last name.” swag?
- A bit of both, I mean, it was... School, for me, was interesting because I think I got saved by music. So, I definitely was like the kid, like no change to it narrowly, but I had, like, the picky, afro hair that was sort of funny-shaped, quite flat in the back. It was like, “this fellow’s weird, plays guitar but it should be…” I mean, I’ve been dealing with that for a bit, but then, and it was weird in that, but then, when I sort of started the band and did my music, and people liked it. So, it was all right. I could kind of avoid the police and the… So, then at school for me and the reason why I went back and did that performance is like, I felt really lucky because music sort of saved me. And that was the place I found it, remember my first concert ever I did was in that hall.
Right.
- And in that moment, I was like, “Oh, found what I need to do. I need to go to the house parties, I need to fit in. I need to even really and much to my mom’s sort of dismay. And I didn’t even need to, like, study.” I just thought, if I focus on the music, I’ll be fine. And it worked out, so I thought going back would be a nice full circle.
Well, my friend, it was the best kind of triumph return anybody could hope for. I hope the Grammys is as triumph for you. Thank you so much for joining me on the show. I can't wait for you get back out there playing music and doing what you’re doing in all the venues that you had to cancel for coronavirus.
- Thank you again so much.
I appreciate you, my dude, have a good one.

The Daily "Social Distancing" Showになってからの定番スタイルではなく、ベッドに寝そべって、あえて縦画面で自撮り風に撮影した動画は、The Daily Showのチャネルではあるけれど「未編集・ノーチェックで、Trevor自身の個人的な考えを視聴者と共有しますよ。」

"Couples Get Creative.”
Now, don't get it twisted. Coronavirus isn’t breaking up every couple. There’re many lovebirds out there who are taking the initiative, and turning quarantine time into quality time.
You maybe stuck at home but that doesn’t mean date night is canceled.
One couple use their free time to recreate the iconic final dance scene from the 1980s film “Dirty Dancing”
The Jones family is used to being creative, turning famous paintings into their own works of art quarantine style, like “American Gothic”*2 and “Washington closing the Delaware”.*3
Grant recreated date nights around the house. A casino, sports bar, bowling with paper towel pins in their living room.
“I think my favorite part of the date was the dance club. Which was our bathroom and when we went in their, he had music blaring, and then he like, turned the lights on and off.”
Okay, now that guy, that guy deserves all the brownie points*4 in the world. He made a full night club in his bathroom for his woman? Wow, that’s love. And this thing is super realistic. He even charged her $18 for a vodka cranberry and then stole her purse when she got drunk. That is commitment.
“Online Marriage Licenses”
Andre Cuomo, the only American governor who can pull off a tracksuit*5, has signed an executive order, allowing New York couples to get their marriage licenses online, and he’s authorized clerks to perform wedding ceremonies over video.
Now, look. If you ask me, I don’t think anyone, I don’t think any one of us should be making big life decisions during quarantine, okay? No one. Your concept of love is totally skewed right now. You can trust me on this. I spent most of last week in a relationship with a bottle of Purell. I mean, think about it. You are locked up with one person for so long, You probably forget other people exist.
Yeah, you’ll be like," you are the best guy in the world, let’s get married!” And then you're gonna take one walk and you’ll be like “What have I done? (Sobs)"
Basically, any marriage during quarantine should have the same store policy as Best Buy. If I’m not happy with the product after three month, I can return it or at least make an exchange.
“Caught cheating on live TV"
Thanks to coronavirus, we now do everything at home, right? We are working out from home, we're holding office meetings from home, you’re using the bathroom at home. For years we just have been going to Wendy’s*6, right? Is it just me?
And it turns out, you can even have affair at home.
It’s the whoopsie that’s making world headlines. 41-year-old Spanish news anchor Alfonso Merlot was hosting a live show from his home when a naked woman walked right behind him.
“Oh, wait but that’s his wife, his girlfriend, right?”
No, the tea is hot honey*7, are you ready?
Viewers were quick to point out that that in not only is not his girlfriend, it was a colleague.
“Wait, what?”
Yes.
Oh, god damn. God damn! I need to start watching news from Spain. I mean here, it’s all boring stuff about trade wars and climate change. Over there it’s like a telenovela.*8
A naked woman just walking in the background? I bet, next week this guy gets amnesia, and then is replaced by his long lost twin brother.
“Breaking news. I don’t know who I’am. But I know that I love you.”
But, yo. on the real though, this was such an amateur mistake. Everyone by now, everyone should know that you’ve gotta be aware of your background when you are working from home. Okay? The only thing that people should see behind you is some books you’ve never read, and a couple of trophies you won for coming in last place in two marathons.
And if you get busted cheating like this on live TV, there is nothing you can do. Your best option is to channel Donald Trump and just try and blame the media.
“Baby, you know you can’t trust the press. There was no naked woman in the background. Read the transcript, baby. Fake nudes."
“Neighbors with benefits"
So, lots of people right now, are interacting with their neighbours like they've never done before. But thanks to corona virus, we're lerning about that neighbour don't just to be friends. They can also be our friends with benefit.*9
Jeremy Colin was sitting at home alone and look out of his window and saw his next door neighbor dancing. He had never met her before but it was love at first sight. So, he went above and beyond, pulled out his drone and flew it over to her to ask her out on a date.
Michaele D'alpaos first set eyes on Paola Agnelli from his balcony. Michaele managed to track Paola down on Instergram and struck to have a conversation. The couple hasn’t stop talking since. Now they spend their days dreaming about what they’ll do when they finally meet. “I kiss her for an hour.” “I kiss you for two-hour."
Oh. Stop it you two. Get a room. But don’t. Social distancing. You know it’s amazing how this pandemic has warped our perspective. Because if you think about it, before coronavirus, if a guy staring at his neighbor through binoculars and then tracking her with drone, it would not be romantic. It would be a first half hour of a Dateline episode.*10
But I guess this is kind of sweet. You know, the only big problem with dating with your neighbor is that neither of them can ghost*11 each other.
